Highlights: Jack has been doing mostly well with migraines since school has gotten out. I had a great meeting with the principal of Jack's new school. Jack's eligibility for services will be evaluated in the fall.
School has been out for, what?, a week now? I'm not sure as the days all run into one another. We've mostly relaxed around the house and enjoyed our backyard along with videogame fun. Nothing too eventful. Jack has enjoyed being able to sleep in and wake up naturally on his own. He is not a morning person. He hasn't had any waking migraines since school has been out. I think either the magnesium is working wonders or our slow, relaxed days are helping. If he starts feeling unwell, we just rest the migraine away. He has had some rough nights with pain, but nothing like before with migraines coming in the morning, afternoon, evening, all the time. Summer can't last forever, though, and I hope that we can keep the migraines away in the fall.
In preparation for fall, I met with the principal of Jack's new school. I didn't want to push myself in the door too early, but I didn't want to wait for there to be a "problem" before taking action. The principal was actually my eighth grade science teacher from 21 years ago, so it was nice to feel connected in that way (even though I'm sure he didn't remember me). I wasn't especially memorable in middle school anyway--I wasn't smart or funny or interesting. Anyway, I learned that the principal had migraines as a kid and his son (Jack's age) also has migraines. I'm of course not happy that they endure this pain, but I feel at ease knowing that they understand exactly what Jack is going through. We will start the fall with the same unofficial accommodations his second grade teacher gave him and gather data to see if he is eligible for more. He currently receives services for speech, so we have a team in place already. The principal also said that he will assign Jack to a specific teacher--one that he knows they will work well together. I honestly have cried a lot of tears worrying over Jack and all the things I can't control. I left the meeting knowing that we still have a lot of work to do, but I am confident that Jack will receive the support he needs at school in the fall.
Jack is still a bit grumpy here and there. It is hard to get him to do much outside of our house. Eliot begged him for a week to go on a bike ride and visit tadpoles in a drainage ditch. Jack finally went a couple of times now. I'd really like to go to the beach soon, but I also know that we will only be able to stay for an hour or so to avoid a migraine. Jack hasn't wanted to go to taekwondo lately, which is disappointing because I was so happy to find something he loved after missing out on other activities, like soccer. He keeps saying he wants to quit, and I don't want to force him into something he doesn't want to do, but I think he is ready to walk away without really thinking it through. So I told him to just hang on through the summer and we'll reconsider in the fall.
Overall, things are looking up for Jack this summer!
